A Few Morning Notes

Good morning, everyone.

I’m consuming as much writing as I can. I’m hoping to draw on it later for inspiration in my own material. Writers like Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway often drew on their own life for material.

This has become classic advice among writers, to write what they know. When you have an endless well of experience to draw from, writer’s block can’t really find a good foothold.

I know of one writer who has built an entire career just jotting down his nightmares. Not that I’d always advise that or think it works for everyone, but it’s good methodology for him at least.

For The Record:

Sometimes, if a topic someone else has written about catches my interest, I might write about that topic as well. I don’t mean to steal anybody’s thunder by doing so. Cheers.

Found A New (To Me) Book

I started reading a novel this morning, I found it in a virtual/online library and it really kept my interest. It was one part mystery, one part police procedural, and I will get back to reading it soon. I was advised once that the best writers are avid readers first, and I can see the logic in that. I might review it on my niche review blog later, haven’t yet decided fully.

A Lesson From Charles Dickens

I read somewhere recently that one of Charles Dickens’ novels was originally published not as a book, but as a series of articles. Whether the story is based in fact or not, it’s still a cool story, and (especially) in the blogging age, very helpful to aspiring writers everywhere.

Assuming the story is true, why not take a page (or a few) from his playbook?
